Acne - Acne is one of the most common skin conditions that affects both youth during puberty as well as many adults well into their 50s. Hormones, diet, genetics can affect the severity of your acne, and knowing what type of acne you have makes it easier to treat and prevent breakouts.
Read on to find out about the different types of Acne.
Whiteheads
Most acne occurs when the pores in your skin are clogged. Whiteheads are little white bumps that appear on the top of your skin, and happen when your pores are clogged all the way through. Do not try to remove your whiteheads by squeezing or popping them, as you may end up with scarring. If over-the-counter treatments do not work, visit your doctor to find out what the underlying problem is.
Blackheads
This type of acne looks black on the surface of the skin. This type of breakout is a mild type of acne that usually form on the face, but they can also appear on your back and chest. While they can be removed by squeezing, doctors usually advice people to refrain from doing so due to potential scarring.
Papules
These small red bumps form when you have excess oil or skin cells that mix with a certain type of bacteria. Papules are acne the do not contain pus. Some doctors prescribe topical retinoids or antibiotics to help control this types of inflammatory acne.
Pustules
Similar to papule, this acne type contains pus, and shows up on the skin as a red, inflamed bump with a white center. While pustules can form due to blacked pores, they can also form because of hormonal changes.
Nodules
These red bumps are usually painful, and are an infection that occurs deep within the pore. Over-the-counter treatments are less likely to work with this type of acne. If medication does not work, your doctor may have to drain the nodule.
Cysts
Cystic acne is usually occurs due to an infection deep within the skin. They are big, flare up, painful, and more often than not pus-filled. Cystic acne is also the most difficult acne to treat. A visit to your doctor is necessary to treat this type of breakout.
